Case Study: Hobson Bay City Council Civic Centre - Hydroseeding

The project required careful planning to ensure all works were completed without disrupting staff working adjacent to the grass area.

Client: Hobson City Bay Council
Completion Date: 16/10/2025

Project Overview

Hobson City Bay Council engaged Ausland to establish new grass through seeding at their depot site. The goal was to enhance the overall aesthetics and functionality of the area, particularly for council gatherings and events such as Christmas parties.

The project required careful planning to ensure all works were completed without disrupting staff working adjacent to the grass area.

Our Approach

To achieve a strong and even grass establishment, we installed a hydroseeding method that combines Flexterra and grass seed in a single application.

Flexterra Benefits: This product includes a tackifier that helps the seed adhere to the soil surface, reducing erosion and improving germination rates.
Mix Ratio: Unlike a standard pulp-to-seed mix ratio of 4:1, Flexterra was applied at a 2:1 ratio, optimising seed coverage and soil contact.

Results

While Flexterra requires additional care during application, including proper training to avoid blockages and overspray on surrounding infrastructure such as light poles and crossovers, the results were excellent.

The seeded area, combined with the pre-prepared topsoil and existing sprinkler irrigation system, achieved strong establishment and early signs of healthy growth, with positive feedback received from Council.

The Ausland team have provided colour & texture to the streets of Bloomdale Estate.

Trees, shrubs, and other plants can help to beautify an area and provide a sense of tranquillity. They can also reduce air pollution, improve air quality, reduce noise levels, and provide shade.

The Ausland team have provided colour & texture to the streets of Bloomdale Estate.

One of the most important benefits of plants and trees to streetscapes and people is that they can enhance the aesthetics of an area to make it more attractive and inviting.

We use plants to create borders and separate areas. This can add a sense of character to an area and can be a great way to create a sense of identity in an area.

In addition to their aesthetic value, plants and trees can also provide many environmental benefits. Trees are particularly important, as they can absorb pollutants, reduce noise levels, and provide shade. Trees can also provide habitat for birds and other wildlife, helping to maintain biodiversity in an area.

The addition of plants and greenery is known to have mental health benefits and can help reduce stress levels and provide a sense of relaxation.

Trees can increase curb appeal and make an area look more attractive. In addition, trees can help to reduce runoff, which can help to reduce the cost of stormwater management.

Ausland wil continue to maintain and support the growth and presence of plants and trees across the streetscapes.

The Ausland team have been involved in the development of the Bloomdale community in Diggers Rest for many years now.

Creating the Floré Neighbourhood Park was very exciting as it is the area's biggest community parkland, spanning one hectare and boasting numerous opportunities for fun and discovery across nature-based play zones.

The playground was developed in close collaboration with the local community who wanted a space for everyone to enjoy. The space provides everything for both active and passive activity across a range of ages from toddler friendly equipment, to a 3.5m high slide and spaces for picnics, seating and more.

Designed by CDA Design Group, they have incorporated elements of accessibility, safety, visibility and shade. The open grass area is designed to encourage groups of friends and families to play together while also helping to increase park safety by providing clear sight lines.

Floré Neighbourhood Park also provides increased connectivity for residents and links to the community’s broader park network and facilities like a multi-sport half court and goal post, fitness equipment, table tennis table and children’s playground.

The timbers have been locally sourced from Norwood Products in Geelong.

You can visit the park at Bouquet Cct, Diggers Rest VIC 3427.

Our team has been working on the Bloomdale estate in Diggers Rest for approx 7 years and are still working on various stages.

Ausland have built streetscapes, reserves, parklands and playgrounds and over this time there has been an increased demand for greenspaces and parklands in the community as we seek ways to stay physically and mentally healthy. Bloomdale’s carefully designed master plan includes over 13ha of wetlands, 40kms of shared walking paths and bike tracks and 4ha of open space including 6 community parks.

The estate, managed by AVID Property Group, has attained the EnviroDevelopment certification. We work to protect and enhance existing native ecosystems, encourage natural systems, native biodiversity and rehabilitate degraded sites wherever possible.

The extensive parks and open spaces are linked by routes shared by native trees and shrubs, providing comfort along the footpaths and streets, especially on warmer days.

It is great to witness how the community uses the spaces. We are currently working on Stage 32.

As a local business in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne, we were happy to hear the announcement by the Victorian Government of the ‘More Trees for a Cooler, Greener West program’. Just over 180,000 trees were planted across the six local councils, Melton, Brimbank, Moonee Valley, Maribrynong and Hobsons Bay.

Lily, the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change made the announcement earlier this year. With the goal to transform some of the most barren parts of Western Melbourne and tackle some pressing environmental problems.

The Eastern parts of Melbourne are known as the ‘leafy suburb’ and for good reason with almost 26% urban tree cover. The Southern part is 15% and the North is 12%, but when you go West that figure plummets to just 5.5%.

This doesn’t just mean less shade and attractive greenery; it also means that the average temperature in the Western Suburbs also goes up. As the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change states ‘’We know that areas that have good tree canopy coverage, can reduce their temperatures by 10 and 25 degrees.’’

But it’s not just about reducing urban temperature, providing more accessible green spaces also improves communities’ mental and physical health by increasing connections with nature.

The trees will be planted outside schools, walking trails, in parks and on residential streets. According to the Victorian State Government website so far 120,000 trees have been planted by October 2022.

We have completed over 2,000 front gardens in the Williams Landing Estate.

Not only does this turn-key solution help entice new buyers over the line; the resulting professionally landscaped street frontages will dramatically enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the development.

We recently completed over 2,000 front gardens at the Williams Landing Estate. The Williams Landing Estate has four residential neighbourhoods that flow around the thriving town centre and each neighbourhood has an abundance of parkland.

This has been a project that we have been working on for many years now and we are so proud with how the landscaping has turned out.

Delivering on homes with a completed front of lot not only hugely encourages buyers over the line but it also dramatically enhances the aesthetic appeal of the development as a whole.

When purchasing a new home with a completed front of lot, the buyer can walk through the front door and rest assured that no immediate work needs to be completed on the property. We are also able to deliver on a visually consistent front of lot feel across the whole development.

We work closely with the developer to deliver front of garden packages that compliment and highlight the features of the residential homes to drive further value to the development.

Offering landscaping as part of the residential new home sales packages is easy with Ausland.

With just over 2.2 million (roughly 9%) of Australians reporting a mental health condition (including depression or anxiety) now more than ever is the time to raise awareness and remove the stigma that comes with mental health. Which is why the team at Ausland participated in the Push Up Challenge, completing 21,211 push-ups over 24 days! We raised a total of $2712 of which we donated $1637 to the Movember cause.

The Push Up Challenge was founded in 2017 and since then has seen over 300,000 participants push for better mental health and has raised over $26 million for mental health and suicide prevention in Australia.

This challenge was an easy decision for the Ausland family, as one of our very own team members had their own personal battle with mental health. In 2020 during the pandemic Tani Bleeze struggled with mental health, which was frightening and exhausting. With the love and support from everyone around her she was able to take her time and recover.

We are very proud of our Ausland team for participating in such an important cause and we hope that we can inspire other businesses to get involved and help break the stigma of mental health.

Tani Bleeze’s Story:

Why am I pushing for better mental health?

Well, in 2020 during the pandemic, I suddenly and unexpectedly found myself in a battle with my mental health. It was frightening and exhausting. I was so lucky to have the support of everyone around me.

Iain, Nick and my Ausland family picked up the slack for me at work, supported my family and kept my seat warm for me while I slowly recovered. I couldn't have done it without all that support, so I really feel for those that don't have the same.

I want to raise awareness and remove the stigma that comes with mental health, especially in the workplace.

It's real, we can't ignore it any longer. The stats prove how serious it is. I'm so proud of my team with each push up they do, it feels like we're getting a little bit closer to normalizing the subject of mental health.
